Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the powerful weather system triggered extensive flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of 1.4 million residents nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented rising waters climbing to rooftop levels and homes being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel rescued fourteen people who were trapped on the roof engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident frantically contacted us, saying the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We rescued him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials announced at least two deaths: one from drowning on the island and another who died when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The super typhoon weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

According to meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is expected to lose strength as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service stated it was still working to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit shortly following another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people with another 135 missing prior to advancing toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing were halted on Sunday due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making cyclones more intense and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers have found that the frequency of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has risen doubled in the past twenty years.

International estimates indicate that severe weather events result in approximately millions in dollars in damage for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president declared a state of emergency last week due to the extensive devastation from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
